It’s been a hectic week. First finishing up on the documentary on FabLab, then flying to Lisbon for the conference, just before the cloud disrupted flights in Northern Europe, then just in time preparation for a talk and the premiere of the documentary on Saturday and afterwards worrying about getting home and arranging for our tickets to be rebooked to next Friday.

The conference was great. The documentary looked awesome on a huge screen and my presentation went very well, even without time to practice the story beforehand
I will share my presentation full-text after I had the time to edit it for publishing. For now, here are the slides. Read the notes accompanying the slides on Slideshare:

My goal in the next two months is to create a documentary on the Dutch Fab Lab scene, which will be shown in some form at SHiFT in April. It is a bit of a wild idea, but it’s an excellent way for me to practice my skills on creating a slightly longer film involving other people.

The general idea:
3 or 4 stories on powerful examples of products created within the Labs, told by the labmanagers in NL, alternated with stories from ‘open day’ visitors at ProtoSpace explaining and showing what they’re working on.

Extra material I can use:
- I already wrote an introduction for the workshop Siert, Ton and I suggested for the pre-workshop day at SHiFT. I can use it as a storyline for the beginning of the documentary (voice-over);
- Some labs take pictures of the things created in the Labs, I can use those stills to show examples.

I’m wondering: would you be interested in watching this documentary? What would you like to discover about Fab Lab? What would you want to know from the Fab Lab users?

Would love to hear some feedback

So I’m finally getting out of my comfort zone and proposed a (speaking) session at SHiFT, Lisbon, April 16-17.

SHiFT is a happening, an international conference and unique event, gathering leaders and participants from all walks of life, to discuss and share Social and Human Ideas For Technology.

The conference theme this year is DIY. This is my proposal:

Do It Yourself.
Three simple words. Three simple words often seen together. Three simple words that, once put together, create meaning beyond the individual value of each word.

DO: Do what? Do when? Do where?
IT: Referring to what exactly?
YOURSELF: Just me?

The combination of these three words immediately impacts us. It sounds like something anyone should want. This small sentence shouts at us: “The power is yours.” Hearing this sentence immediately urges us to act, now.

But let’s step back for just a second and try to understand the meaning and implications of these words on our lives. The simplicity starts to fade and a complex story unfolds.

A story about work, education and relationships.

And perhaps, once we uncover this story, we will understand the real meaning of DIY.

The challenge is to uncover this story before the conference

Last week I wrote about stop using the name Skallagrigg as my company name. My thoughts around that are developing.

I started thinking why I chose the name to begin with and, as I said last week, the story (still) resonates with some of the things that I think are very important in life. One thing in particular: how (computer)technology enables a communicative disabled girl. It feels wrong to let go of this idea in my work.

Skallagrigg is a novel, a story. On my English ‘business’-cards I put in a line about me “documenting people’s stories”. Adding those things up today (taking showers are way underrated in the workflow) I came to the sum that I can turn Skallagrigg into a project, just like In Full Flow is a project, for collecting stories on how technology enables people.

I even know where I want to start: collecting stories from people in the FabLab community.

Sounds like a plan! (and a story to share on Shift 2010?)

(about the number in the title)

Now that the Shift-site (finally) has been updated with the new dates for the conference, it’s time to start thinking about a story I could share at Shift. There’s not an obvious story on the surface, so I’ll have to digg a little deeper. Hmmm…what could it be?
