The barriers we create

My garden fence

This is my garden fence. I didn't put it there, but I'm glad it's there. Whenever I step into the garden I'm not confronted with my neighbours directly. We humans like putting up barriers between 'us' and 'them'. We humans like our privacy (except for those few weeks in a year we spent camping, observing our neighbours shamelessly).

My cat doesn't see borders

In contrast, my cat spends more time in our neighbours garden than in our own. She has no perception of physical borders. In fact, both our cats know more from our neighbours and the neigbourhood than we do. Every now and then we get visitors in our garden too. Rarely humans though.
