Smart women , beware!
Whilst all TV nannies preach about positive feedback and ignoring bad behaviour, one of the biggest political parties suggests to do the opposite. The PvdA (social party) wants for higher educated women to pay back for their education when they 'decide not to choose for a job after their education' (students monthly receive a VERY modest amount of money from the government, not even enough to pay the rent AND half of it goes back to the same government in terms of tuition fee). It's supposedly a waste of society's money. I'm at a loss for words, actually!
[Update 14:04 pm]: apparently I'm not the only one who disagrees with this idea.

UK: 11-year-olds are getting dumber
Well, of course that might be a bit exaggerated, but nevertheless according to this article researchers Adey and Shayer have come to the conclusion that 11-year-olds from now score worse on the same test pupils first took in 1976. Some shocking figures:
"In 1976 a third of boys and a quarter of girls scored highly in the tests overall; by 2004, the figures had plummeted to just 6% of boys and 5% of girls. These children were on average two to three years behind those who were tested in the mid-1990s."
It's still a bit speculating what the cause is of the decline in knowledge. The researchers think that hands-on experience, such as playing in the mud and with Meccano, has declined for children. They learn too little about how materials behave in the real world. "They have the facts but they are not thinking very well."
I'm curious to see whether these results will have an impact on the UK government. Will they reconsider the educational program?

International women's day
Yep, it's today and in contrast with previous years I'm blogging it. Normally I don't care that much for international whatever day it is, but this year I got an invitation from Stephanie Hendrick to write a short post for the Women@tech blog. I thought it was a great initiative to start that blog so I thought it would be fun to write a little something. You can read my contribution there as well other women's view on technology.
