Old versus new leadership - where do you stand?
I can't stop thinking about the description Charles Leadbeater gave of new types of leaders last March in Amsterdam. The leaders of organizations that embrace the swarm model (e.g. e-bay) are different than the leaders we usually see according to Leadbeater. They are more egalitarian, humble, self-effacing, meritocratic and their authority is based on performance. In contrast with 'traditional' leaders they are not heroic, charismatic, brash or aggressive. (view the presentation Leadbeater gave yourself (144MB))
Do you recognize this pattern? Do you see these differences in leadership in your company or the companies you work with? If you consider yourself a leader, where do you think you stand?
Hi Elmine, I think this is Servant Leadership. And the paradigm of this leadership starts first with serving as a natural feeling/behaviour. Later on this kind of person is recognized as a leader. Not becasue of his carrier, jobdescription, managementrole etc. but by means of the attitudes you described. A good example is Robert Greenleaf or leadership such as Gandhi. We all become more and more aware that just ratio or postion is not what counts. But those leaders are listeners, are authentic, emphatic, can make people 'whole', are able to conceptualise and to see forward in future, they want to contribute to people's personal growth, they think stewardship as important, they are present, a.s.o.
I have made some MindMaps: http://hmestrum.blogs.com/my_weblog/2005/01/ander_leidersch.html in the past which are perhaps interesting
